_The ExtraOrbital pledge · 001 — Giving back_

## Join ExtraOrbital. Fund an open source project.

Every paying seat supports the people and open source that got you here.

Choose an open source project—or the person who brought you here. We contribute $10 per paid month, up to $120, at no extra cost.

[Choose your beneficiary](https://extraorbital.dev/giving-back#choose) · [Read the pledge](https://extraorbital.dev/giving-back#how)

- **$10 / month.** From your paid seat. Never on top.
- **$120 total.** Up to 12 paid months per person.
- **One beneficiary.** A person or a project. Chosen for good.

## Nothing great is built alone.

Software is a community of humans and agents improving their tools together. Open source carries most of what we all build. We want that community to grow.

So a share of every paid seat goes back to it: to the person who brought you here, or to the open source project you choose. Even if its maintainers haven’t heard of us yet.

**The person counts. Not the number of teams.** Five teams paying for your seat still means $10 a month. Each teammate chooses their own beneficiary. If no team pays for your seat, contributions pause; they resume when a team pays again, up to 12 paid months.

## Who helped you get here?

Choose the person who introduced you, or a project you build on.

### A person: pass the good turn on.

Follow their referral link when you sign up. Already here? Name the person who brought you from your terminal.

```bash
npx extraorbital --❤️ their-slug
```

Their slug is the name they reserved. Referral links are good for 90 days.

### A project: support what supports you.

Choose an open source repository or domain. Unclaimed contributions wait for the project’s maintainers.

```bash
npx extraorbital --❤️ org/repo
```

Saved on your machine and applied when it links to your account, or immediately if already linked.

**One choice. Make it count.** Your first beneficiary is permanent. You can’t choose both, change it later, or choose yourself.

## Bringing people with you? Make your introduction go a little further.

Reserve your slug in Account → Affiliate. Get your referral link, CLI line, README and deploy-button snippets, agent prompts, and ready-made posts. Your slug is yours for good.

## They picked your project. Claim it.

People can support your repository or domain before you join. Verify ownership to receive its supporters and the contributions already set aside.

[Claim your project](https://extraorbital.dev/account/affiliate)

1. **Ask for a token.** Under Account → Affiliate, Claim a project takes a GitHub repository (org/repo or its URL) or a domain, and gives you a one-time token, valid for seven days.
2. **Publish it.** For a repository: the file .github/extraorbital-affiliate on the default branch of the public repository. For a domain: a TXT record on _extraorbital.<domain>, or the file /.well-known/extraorbital-affiliate served over HTTPS.
3. **Verify, and receive.** Press Verify. Everyone who already chose the project, and everything their seats gave it, is yours from then on. Another forge? Write to hello@extraorbital.dev from an address the project lists.

## Good questions.

### Why do you do that instead of funding open source directly?

We’re a very small team with no VC funding, so we can’t make significant contributions on our own. But we recognize that open source is the beating heart of software today—and that it remains largely underfunded. A pricing structure that lets our users give back feels like a gesture we can afford to make. It also gives us a reason to get up in the morning: the more we grow, the more open source grows too.

### Can I have more than one beneficiary?

No. Each person has one: a person or a project. Your teammates each choose their own.

### Can I change it later?

No. The first beneficiary that reaches your account — a referral link at sign-up, a --❤️ on one of your machines, or your dashboard — is the only one. A later one changes nothing, and the CLI and the dashboard tell you so.

### Can I support a person and a project?

No, we don't pay both. An account that already supports a person cannot attach a project, and the reverse: “You already support X; each account supports one person or project, once.”

### I'm on five paid teams. Is that $50 a month?

No: $10 a month. It is counted per person and per calendar month, however many of your teams pay for your seat.

### What happens when my seat stops being paid?

The credits stop. If a team pays for your seat again, they resume from the month you reached, up to the twelfth.

### Does it cost me anything?

No. It comes out of what ExtraOrbital is paid for your seat, never on top of it.

### How are beneficiaries paid?

By hand, from an append-only ledger: one row per person per paid month, written when the payment arrives and never changed. The dashboard shows amounts as pending until they are paid out.

## Keep it going.

Every contribution builds what comes next.

One person. One project. A little further.
